Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Despite not fully knowing what causes CFS, we do know that it mostly strikes women in their 40s and 50s. The main symptom is feeling severe enough fatigue that it affects your daily life. This is the type of extreme fatigue that lasts a long time – at least six months – and doesn’t resolve with bed rest.

In addition to tiredness, you may also experience:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Difficulty getting out of bed
  • Crashing during the day
  • Increased energy at night
  • Multi-joint pain
  • Poor sleep
  • Weight gain
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen or tender lymph nodes in your armpits or neck

CFS can also cause other issues, such as insomnia, memory loss, or an inability to concentrate.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatment

At Manhattan Integrative Medicine, Dr. Borenstein uses the proven and highly successful S.H.I.N.E.® Protocol to treat CFS symptoms.

This particular treatment method was created and tested by Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, a chronic fatigue expert. He found that those who followed this particular approach saw significant relief from their CFS symptoms. The results improved over time, with many showing continued improvement two years after the study ended.

S.H.I.N.E.® stands for the five main areas that, when addressed at the same time, help powerfully treat your CFS. These five areas are:

  1. Sleep

Those with CFS require a significant amount of sleep. After a close examination, Dr. Borenstein will prescribe a sleep support regimen to help you rest and replenish your energy. This may include:

    • Sleep supplements, such as amino acids (L-theanine and tryptophan), melatonin, or 5HTP to help you unwind and achieve quality sleep.
    • Medications, such as Ambien, Gabapentin, or Trazodone to help you sleep deeper and more restfully.
    • A sleep hygiene lifestyle that involves sticking to a sleep schedule and creating an optimal sleeping environment.
    • Relaxation techniques, like meditation, Tai Chi, or Epsom salt baths to help you get the restorative sleep you need.

The goal is to create a routine and get the needed support to have eight to nine hours of restful, deep sleep every night.

  2. Hormones

Hormone imbalances can cause CFS to flare up. Unfortunately, standard blood testing often falls short in showing the full picture. Dr. Borenstein will perform extensive blood, saliva, and urine tests to uncover any hormone abnormalities. Regularly tested hormone levels include:

    • Thyroid (TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, Thyroid Antibodies)
    • Adrenal testing including morning cortisol, DHEA, ACTH, and aldosterone
    • Sex hormones including Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone
    • Insulin
    • Leptin

When one of these levels is off, it can throw the others off as well. Dr. Borenstein will take a close look at your various hormone levels to see what fluctuations you may be experiencing. From there, he’ll prescribe treatments to help restore healthy hormone levels.

  3. Immunity or Infections

Certain viral or bacterial infections can sometimes trigger CFS. Dr. Borenstein will perform the necessary tests to see if you have any infections in your body, such as:

    • Epstein-Barr virus
    • HHV-6 virus
    • HSV1 and HSV2 virus
    • Yeast infections
    • Candida

After Dr. Borenstein understands what infections may be at play, he’ll prescribe the proper probiotics, antifungals, or antivirals to help your body heal.

  4. Nutrition

Certain foods and nutrient deficits can trigger symptoms of CFS. Dr. Borenstein may prescribe supplements and nutrition plans to alleviate deficiencies, manage your symptoms, and increase your energy. These treatments can include:

    • Myers Cocktail to support your immune function and metabolism
    • Low-Dose Naltrexone to help relieve your CFS symptoms
    • Symptom-specific supplements to improve your sleep, energy, mood, pain levels, immune system, and brain function

Before beginning any protocol, Dr. Borenstein takes into account your current medications to avoid any potential interactions.

  5. Exercise

Exercising with CFS is a tricky balance. The key is designing a tailored exercise plan that doesn’t overwhelm your body – and then slowly building from there.

Dr. Borenstein will help you design a plan that outlines exactly what type and how much exercise you need throughout the week. He, along with his team, will carefully monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments along the way.
