Menopause is an eventuality every woman must face, but its worst symptoms can be alleviated – and you don’t need to face it alone. To schedule your consultation with Florida’s top Menopause specialist, complete the form below or call us at (754) 247-0122 today!

What is Menopause?

Menopause is defined as the period in a woman's life when her ovaries stop producing eggs and menstruation ceases. Normally, menopause occurs somewhere around age 50, but its onset can range from age 40 to 60.

A woman is considered to be in menopause when she hasn't had a period for 12 months in a row. Hormonal changes occur during this transition that can be the source of troublesome symptoms that diminish a woman’s quality of life – and can profoundly impact health.

Causes of Menopause

As women age into midlife, they naturally transition from their fertile, childbearing years into the stage of Menopause. Sexual hormones are the chemical messengers that play a key role in this transition.

Estrogen—a hormone made in the ovaries—is thought to be one hormone especially reduced by menopause. As estrogen levels fall, many of the telltale symptoms of Menopause begin to emerge. Other hormones that may decline include progesterone and testosterone.

Other than the natural transition that occurs with aging, additional causes of menopause include:

  • low levels of hormone production in ovaries (primary ovarian insufficiency)
  • chemotherapy
  • ovary removal via surgery (bilateral oophorectomy)
  • hysterectomy that includes removal of ovaries
  • radiation delivered to the pelvic area
  • injury to the pelvic area

Symptoms of Menopause

In perimenopause - the period leading up to menopause - common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Reduction in sex drive
  • Sleep irregularities
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Chills
  • Night sweats
  • Diminished breast size or fullness
  • Slower metabolism
  • Dry skin
  • Thinning hair
  • insomnia
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Increased urination
  • Loss of bone mass

As the body settles into Menopause, there are health concerns that may arise because of the changes in a woman’s body that have occurred, especially reduced estrogen. Post-menopausal women are at high risk, for example, of developing osteoporosis and heart disease - and there are even cosmetic concerns from collagen loss, hair loss or dry, brittle skin. The health concerns of post-menopausal women require very specialized expertise and care – and a precise balancing of the hormones as they shift.

Relieving the Symptoms of Menopause

The course of treatment will vary with each individual patient. Primary treatment tools that cannot be overlooked include hormone testing and optimizing hormone levels. With Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), Dr. Borenstein can rebalance whatever hormonal deficiency you may be experiencing. After reviewing your medical history, current medications, lifestyle, and other health factors, Dr. Borenstein will perform a saliva, urine, or blood test to determine your current hormone levels. Doing so will help determine which hormones may require balancing.

BHRT testosterone and estrogen can be delivered as transdermal cream on the arms or thighs, or in the case of vaginal dryness, intravaginal bioidentical estrogen. BHRT progesterone can be delivered as a cream too, as well as a capsule.

Dr. Borenstein will discuss your specific BHRT protocol in detail, including treatment duration, possible side effects, dosing, and a timeline for when you can expect to see effects.

We offer countless other approaches, as well, to counteract the changes in your body the onset of Menopause may trigger. For instance, weight gain during menopause can be addressed through metabolic weight loss.
