Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has revolutionized the treatment of shoulder conditions like labral tears, bursitis, rotator cuff injuries and frozen shoulder. From shoulder impingement to shoulder osteoarthritis, PRP has the potential to accelerate healing and improve outcomes in a myriad of musculoskeletal conditions involving your shoulders.
PRP is especially beneficial for shoulder injuries involving soft tissues like muscles, ligaments, and tendons. PRP works by stimulating the body's natural healing processes through the concentration of platelets and growth factors.

PRP therapy has quickly become the most well-known and widely celebrated treatment in the rapidly developing field of regenerative medicine. PRP Shoulder Treatment works by harnessing your body’s own healing abilities to promote the repair and regeneration of soft tissue injuries in your shoulder.
The term "platelet-rich plasma" was coined in 1954 and first used in the 1970s. Because of its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and cell growth promoting potential, its use began to accelerate in the 1980s, especially in surgical procedures, and it exploded in popularity in the early 2000s – a trend that has only continued.
PRP’s current applications range from cardiac muscle injury to plastic surgery, nerve injury, oral surgery, aesthetics and musculoskeletal injuries, and the list of applications appears to be growing every day.
PRP is basically your own blood that has been enriched by concentrating platelets above their normal concentration. These platelets contain special growth factors which promote healing in injured tissues. Also known as thrombocytes, the platelets that are extracted from your own blood can be safely re-injected into injured areas of your body, including your shoulder, to accelerate healing and improve outcomes.
The process involves extracting a small amount of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the other components in your blood. When the concentrated platelet-rich plasma is injected into the injured areas of your shoulder, it can:
Research has shown that PRP not only reduces the time it takes for injuries to heal but can help treat injuries that have not responded to other treatments – simply by harnessing your body’s intrinsic healing capabilities.
PRP Shoulder Treatment is able to target damaged shoulder muscles, ligaments, and tendons – alleviating pain, reducing inflammation and accelerating the healing process. It can restore function and mobility quickly. The following shoulder conditions generally respond well to PRP Shoulder Treatment:
Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder): PRP can improve mobility and relieve pain.
Bursitis: PRP can reduce swelling and pain and restore bursa health.
Labral Tears: PRP is an excellent option to treat a torn labrum, especially in non-surgical cases.
Shoulder Impingement: PRP can restore movement and reduce inflammation and pain.
Tendonitis: PRP can trigger healing and reduce inflammation and pain in inflamed or degenerated tendons.
Osteoarthritis: PRP can slow cartilage degeneration in shoulder osteoarthritis and provide relief from symptoms like pain and inflammation, as well as reduced function and range of motion.
Rotator Cuff Injuries: PRP can reduce pain and inflammation and help repair damaged tendons.
Shoulder Ligament Injuries: PRP can enhance healing in the acromioclavicular (AC) joint, as well as some other shoulder ligament injuries.
In addition to shoulder conditions, our clinic also offers PRP treatments for a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries in the following areas, as well:
PRP treatments are less invasive and less expensive than traditional surgery. With no downtime, they heal injured and damaged tissue and have an excellent safety profile.

At Manhattan Integrative Medicine of South Florida in Boca Raton, we offer the most up-to-date evaluation and treatment with PRP. On your first visit, Dr. Borenstein will discuss your medical history, lifestyle, daily stressors, diet, exercise habits, and current medications. We recommend that you prepare a list of symptoms prior to your first consultation.
A PRP Shoulder Treatment – from blood draw to injection - typically takes around 30-60 minutes and can usually be completed in our offices during your lunch hour. Your first consultation may take longer as we will require a complete medical history and exam.
Results vary among Dr. Borenstein’s patients. You may see a difference in function, pain and inflammation within one to two weeks after treatment, with full benefits unfolding over four to six weeks.
The number of PRP treatments you may need for shoulder pain and injury will vary depending on your particular condition and how your body responds to PRP treatment. Most patients require one to three injections, spaced four to six weeks apart. Some people experience significant improvement after just one injection, while others sometimes require a series of injections. The specific number and timing of treatments will be determined by Dr. Borenstein as he evaluates your progress.
In general, PRP has an excellent safety profile. Please discuss all of your safety concerns at our first session. If you have specific allergies (e.g., to stainless steel), have hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction, anemia, cancer, or blood clotting disorders, any injections may be inadvisable, including PRP. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing or taking certain medications, we may need to delay or advise against treatment.
You can count on Dr. Borenstein to evaluate if PRP is the best choice for you after looking at your medical history, your genetic background and any specific risk factors you may have before we begin your treatment, to ensure your PRP Shoulder Treatment is both safe and effective.
Most of our patients experience little to no discomfort from PRP injections. The injections are considered minimally painful. Of course, some discomfort is expected with any injection. The pain level varies depending on an individual’s tolerance for pain and reaction to needles. The treatment area also can make a difference. At the very worst, you may feel a brief, sharp pain or pressure as the needle enters your skin, and you may experience a mild ache or tenderness after treatment.
Dr. David Borenstein is a top functional medicine practitioner in Florida who recognizes that each patient requires a treatment regimen tailored to his or her individual health profile and specific symptoms. For over 20 years, Dr. Borenstein has been helping patients with musculoskeletal and joint injury and pain.
